Quotes
There were some quotes in this article called Safe Spaces,  that really stood out to me and I feel like they need to be shared to others.
Youth who struggle with Lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender identities or who are bullied for the perception of being different often feel as if they have nowhere to turn.”  With this quote I feel like children should just feel like themselves. Sometimes I see teachers in daycare setting making fun of little boys who play with dolls and they even tell them to go play with the blocks. I feel like they should just let them play where they want to play.
“Death should NEVER be an option.” If you know someone who is sad and says they want to kill themselves, you need to speak with them. Ignoring the problem will make things worse.
Another quote that stood out to me was, “For many youths people suicide feels like a better alternative than living with rejection or abuse from peers, or family members.”  For us adults we must pay attention because stakes for children killing themselves are high.
Here's a few more good points that the article has said:
-Children who see themselves as wise or powerful characters they will feel safe inside the classroom.
In the article it said that a Kindergarten class was reading books about having gay/lesbian parents.
What are your thoughts on that? Do you think that’s too young to learn about this topic?

  1. I love the quotes you have shared and your comments expressing those quotes. I agree with your statement that if boys want to play with dolls instead of guy toys then let them. They should be able to play where they want to play.

  3. I liked the slide that contained the facts about LGBT students in schools. Both seem to be true and unfortunate.

  5. Marissa,
I think you chose really good quotes! I don’t understand why some adults can’t just let children be who they want to be. Why can’t a boy play with dolls? What harm is it causing? Many people are so concerned with educating a child on how to be straight that they neglect the child’s well being. By teaching a young boy that being who he wants to be is wrong, it is no wonder that so many LGBTQ youth feel that suicide is the only answer. If everyone could just let the child be who he or she wants to be, I feel like children would be much happier. Thank you for sharing :)

  6. hi Marissa, I liked the quote you chose for this. I agree with your response to them as well and I really like your question. its definitely an argument that will probably take a while to resolve because no one likes change. just sad that change is the only way for everyone, including the next generations, to be more accepting.

  7. Thank you for your post. I really appreciated your connections to the day care setting. I see the same thing often in Kindergarten at work. Its surprising how many educators have gender stereotypes and discriminate with young children. I doubt they realize how much harm they are doing.
    Great post!

  8. The quotes that you chose are very powerful. I 100% agree with all of them. The explanations you give are spot on. I also like how you included the "LGBT Bullying In School" slide. I don't think people realize the amount of bullying that goes on dealing with LGBT teens. We may go over the stats a numerous amount of times but I don't think people really understand the reality of it. Overall, good job!
