Blog Number 6
I choose option one for this week. I read about Gender and the 2018 election. I thought that these articles would have been more interesting than they actually were. I found them pretty boring. We have been learning and reading about Gender so I wanted to read more about it.
The first article I read was Soloways article. This was about locker rooms and what goes on in locker rooms. It was kind of interesting because I am a girl and reading what goes on in a men's locker room you would have never known what goes on in there. As the article stated when men are alone together, they assess and talk about and point to women and girls that they don't know. The article mentioned that most violence done on this planet is done by men. Which I think is true. What I found so funny and didn't realize it until I read it. But on Sundays what do you think of when you hear the word "Sunday." First word that popped up in your head was most likely not God. It was probably football. According to the article The word football correlates more strongly with Sundays for most Americans than the word God. This article also talked about how people always say boys will be boys and men will be men.
In women locker rooms according to this article we just use these rooms to dry our hair, and put clothes on and talk about how the yoga class was better or worse than last weeks.
The other article I read was Stacy Abrams. This article talked about how she became the first black women ever elected Governor in the United States. talked about how only 7 black women in the country's history have been elected statewide in their own right. This guy named Michael has been riding around in what he calls a deportation bus. He has promised to fill a bus up with murders, rapists, kidnappers, and send them back to Mexico!
While reading this it kind of brought some things to mind from what I read last week in Safe spaces. People are always jumping to conclusions I feel like way to fast, before actually getting to know the person. I don't know how people can be so racists. Or I don't know how people can say boys will be boys but you never really hear girls will be girls.

Here is a picture of the Deportation bus.
What's your thoughts on this idea?

I agree. I thought these articles to be pretty boring and didn't live up to really any expectation. I do think that the picture you have is pretty hilarious though.
ReplyDeleteMarissa, it is quite true what you say that people are always jumping to conclusions and making assumptions. This is truly sad and unfortunately these conclusions often reflect inequality in society. When it comes to white men, people always assume the best. They chalk it up to “boys being boys”. When conclusions are made about a woman or someone in a minority group, they are almost always negative conclusions based on stereotypes. Great analysis!
ReplyDeleteMarissa,
ReplyDeleteI agree with you. I decided to read these articles because I was interested in learning about the limitations women face when it comes to politics. However, the articles weren't as interesting as I had hoped either. I still feel as though I learned something important, though. You did a great analysis of the articles! Great job!
Thank you for your post. I
ReplyDeleteThis guy with the bus really?? There are all types I guess. One thing I disagreed with in the Soloway article was how women don't talk about men that way. I think it isn't as damaging because men are in a position of power but I think women definitely do talk about more than yoga and hair dryers in the locker room. At least that has been my experience.
