The politics of Service Learning
While reading this article it reminded me of Amazing Grace By Johnathan Kozol. This article was talking about poor people just like Amazing Grace was. However in this article they were talking about how high school kids do community service and help out the poor. When in Amazing Grace it was talking about the poor people and how the poor people get free lunches at school.
Another article that I can bestly connect it to is the Kristof Article. In the Kristof Article they talked about parents incomes and children's poverty. I think that all high schools even middle schoolers should do community service hours for the poor. I think it would make poor families feel better and make them feel happy that people want to help them. I think it was great for students to interact with those less fortunate than themselves. They experienced things that I have not even experienced. I had to do community service for a graduation requirement but I did mine at a daycare not with the homeless. I never worked with the homeless. I just help them out even though they don't know that I do, but I do food drives and I do toys for tots around the holidays every year. I wish they knew who I was sometimes.
One quote that totally stood out for me in this article is "I was scared because my mom had told me it was a bad neighborhood and to be careful." My parents use to tell me this all the time if I was at a friends house playing outside. I think its not right to say that to children to be honest. Any neighborhood can be bad. A stranger can come up any street and just start shooting or come kid nap you. It can happen in a mall, or your own house. SO I think parents need to stop saying that.

You don't need to do community service in order to help those in need. When you see these boxes, donate something, anything counts.

All these people help out to make sure children wake up to toys under their tree every Christmas. All you have to do is donate a toy if you don't have time to actually organize the toys. Anything helps.

I liked reading about how you connected this article to the other articles we have read about. I also like the pictures you included, especially the one with the donation bin.
ReplyDeleteMarissa, I really liked your blog this week. In fact, I used it as inspiration for mine. I liked the connections you made and the points you chose to highlight. Great job!
ReplyDeleteYour connections with the other two articles were very well composed! I wouldn't have thought to connect this reading with any other but you blog helped me to see the connections! I liked how you talked about "bad things can happen in any neighborhood" I think that is an important thing to note because its so true and not everyone thinks that way its just like good things can happen in a "bad" neighborhood!
ReplyDeleteI wouldn't have made these connections myself. I really enjoyed seeing your train of thought on this, and it helped add another layer of meaning to the article.
