Argument
These authors both argue that speaking two languages in households is a good thing and it needs to happen. According in Richards’s article in Aria, the three nuns that went to a house to ask parents if they only spoke Spanish to their children while at home seemed to be upset that they only spoke to their child in Spanish at home. I don’t know why they would be so upset that they only speak Spanish with them at home. It’s how they are raising them. Maybe the parents don’t know English that well. Why should nuns go out of their way to go to a house to speak to a child’s parents? If a child can’t pick up on English at school there’s programs at school that can help the child learn more English than their parents know. But then I can see why the nuns were mad that they only speaking Spanish to them at home. When they are at school most likely their teacher doesn’t know Spanish. They probably only know a few words in Spanish. But I still think that it’s the schools job too to teach them how to speak English. In the article Aria the parents still spoke Spanish without the child knowing. The child can hear them from the other room speaking Spanish to one another but when the child is present in the same room as them they change to speaking English. It’s their house they should speak whatever language they want.

    I liked how organized your post was, and i liked the point that you were arguing, about how speaking two languages is a positive thing.

    Marissa,
    I agree with you completely. I believe it is the school's job, through programs like multilingual classrooms and ESL programs, to teach children English. Like you said, maybe the parents don't know English. Or even if they do, why should it be the job of the parents to do this? Parents with children who speak English as their first language don't have to worry about teaching their kids a second language, why should parents of English language learners. It is the job of the school to educate children, in all aspects.

    Marissa, to answer your question i believe the schools should be teaching students english and that is why ESL programs are a thing in schools. But in the case of Richard Rodriguez his school forced even his parents to speak in only english which was not fair at all!

    I think it is primarily the schools job. Parents should support their children learning the language spoken at school if they can, but should not make it a one or the other type situation.

Journal number 5    Quotes    There were some quotes in this article called Safe Spaces,  that really stood out to me and I feel like they need to be shared to others.    “ Youth who struggle with Lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender identities or who are bullied for the perception of being different often feel as if they have nowhere to turn.”  With this quote I feel like children should just feel  like themselves. Social Justice Event

I attended the movie "Matt Shepard is a friend of Mine." It was a few weeks ago but I have not had the time to write about it yet. This documentary was about a gay young man. He was tortured and was murdered. Matt died in 1998. He was Dolly Parton one year for Halloween which was probably a huge hint for people that he was gay. His guidance counselor was one of the first people he has told before his own parents, and friends. Matt was afraid that his parents would disown him and reject him. Matt to me I feel like he was a pretty popular boy. He had a lot of friends and he traveled the world so much. He was very adventurous. He loved people and loved making people happy.  Matt loved politics, he wanted to become a actor, he was in many plays. He wanted to change things about the world. He wanted to build a Church.
